Warehouse space – what is it?
A warehouse is an organizational and functional unit where the company's inventory is stored . Currently, it plays a particularly important role due to the development of the e-commerce sector. This space should not only be managed and operated by experienced employees, but also equipped with appropriate technical means . It covers the area:
- communication;
- utilitarian;
- reloading;
- receiving and issuing;
- auxiliary;
- component.
The size of the warehouse space has a significant impact on the overall scope of employee responsibilities. In larger warehouses, in addition to warehousemen, publishers, packers and forklift operators, a manager or dispatcher is employed.
Types of storage spaces
Warehouse spaces vary, among others: structure, height or purpose. For this reason, they come in several forms:
- open warehouses without external walls, used mainly for storing large goods, e.g. vehicles;
- semi-open warehouses in the form of shelters with partially covered external walls - they ensure the flow of light and air, while protecting the stored goods against various weather conditions;
- closed warehouses equipped with external walls that provide protection against weather conditions - they allow control of humidity and temperature inside the warehouse.
Due to the storage height , low-, medium- and high-bay warehouses are distinguished. In the first ones, goods - usually larger ones - are stored at a maximum height. 4.2 meters from the floor . In medium-bay warehouses, this height may reach 7.2 meters , while in the case of high-bay warehouses, goods are stored at much higher heights . Storing supplies at up to 25 meters allows full use of the warehouse space. In addition to commercial and production warehouses, there are also special storage spaces . Special warehouses store, among others: explosive and flammable materials, fruit or goods requiring refrigeration - e.g. some medicines or food.

In the case of the first one, each product has its own assigned place, while the second storage method assumes the use of any empty space . The third method divides the assortment into three groups and focuses on storing goods with the highest rotation frequency in the receiving and issuing area .
